‘The future is now looking very different’ – Daughter’s plea for dad after shock accident left him paralysed

A FATHER was left paralysed after a shock accident and his daughter has made a fundraising appeal to help support him.

Aisling Lacey’s father has been left paralysed after a horrific accident nearly two years ago, which left him with catastrophic injuries, making him paralysed from the neck down.

Before the horrific accident, he used to love being out and about, doing cycle races with his Kerry-based family and friends and doing fun activities with his grandchildren.

He retired a couple of years ago and has been caring for his wife, who has been dealing with MS (multiple sclerosis) for over thirty years.

The couple loved doing active activities together, whether cycling, going for a walk and popping in for a cup of coffee, or spending quality time together.

However, as a result of his accident, Aisling stated that “the future is now looking very different” as he is now dependent on everyone for everything.

This meant he could not go out or do active activities or events with his family.

Launching the GoFundMe, Aisling is hoping to raise enough funds to buy her dad a suitable wheelchair accessible car that will be used by him but help him to stay connected with his family.

The wheelchair-accessible car means that he can travel with his family and go out with his family, which will “greatly improve his quality of life”.

The goal is to raise €48,000 to help cover the cost of the expensive wheelchair-accessible car and improve his quality of life.

Setting up the GoFundMe, Aisling shared her father’s story.

‘CATASTROPHIC INJURIES’

She said: “My name is Aisling and as a family we are hoping to raise enough money to buy Dad a Wheelchair Accessible Car.

“Dad was in a horrific accident nearly two years ago which left him with catastrophic injuries, he is paralysed from the neck down.

P”rior to his accident he was a very active man, loved been out and about, loved attending cycle races with his family and friends and in later years, attending activities with his grandchildren.

“Dad had retired a couple of years before the accident to take care of my mom who has been dealing with MS for over 30 years. They were both thoroughly enjoying this chapter of their lives. They both loved been active, whether it was cycling, going for a walk downtown and popping in for a cup of coffee. They just loved spending time together.

“Unfortunately, since Dad’s accident the future is now looking very different. Dad who was always such an independent man is now dependent on everyone for everything. He is unable to go out and about or attend a lot of activities/events with his family.

“I am hoping to raise enough money to buy Dad a more suitable wheelchair accessible car which will only be used by Dad but will allow his family to travel with him, to allow us to bring him out and which I believe will greatly improve his quality of life.”

The GoFundMe was launched on December 3, and there has been over €29,000 raised for Aisling’s father’s wheelchair-accessible car.

People have been sharing whatever they can to help the family through the tough times.

Three generous people have donated a whopping €1,000 to the fundraiser, while a handful of others donated from €200 to €500.
