‘Scamp the Champ’ to represent Kerry in Nose of Tralee

A Listowel family are hoping that their one-year-old pug pup, Scamp, will become the next winner of the coveted ‘Nose of Tralee’ title after the adorable pup was named as the Kerry finalist this week.

For those of you who are not familiar with what the ‘Nose of Tralee’ is, it’s Pet Sitters Ireland’s annual pet competition to find one pet – whether they be a dog, cat, hamster, rabbit, horse or even a pig – that will then be crowned as the ‘Nose of Tralee’ for a year.

Pets are chosen from each of the 32 counties and they then vie for victory via a public online vote.

Kerry’s hope of taking home the title now rest with the quite loveable Scamp and his proud owners – Charles Duffy; his wife, Jamie; and his two twin daughters, Charlee Ann and Aideen – chatted to us here in The Kerryman to tell us of their delight at Scamp being chosen for the prestigious pedigree presentation.

“We’ve had Scamp almost a year now. We got him around September of last year when he was about 12 weeks old. My two girls, Charlee Ann and Aideen, are two very proud owners,” he said.

“We know that it’s been going on for a few years, but we hadn’t heard of it [the Nose of Tralee] at all until my wife saw a post on Facebook ,and we decided that it would just be something fun to do for the girls, so we decided to enter,” said Charles last week.

“We found out on Tuesday. There had been two weeks of voting.

“Judges had chosen the top three pets from each of the counties, and they then picked one pet from the three, and that pet would then represent their county

“Luckily, Scamp was the one chosen to represent Kerry!” he continued.

“We’re obviously delighted that he’s been chosen.”

Now, Charles and the family say that they need support from the public to get Scamp that crown.

“The voting starts on August 1 and it’s open until August 25,” he said.

“People can go onto the Pet Sitters website and you’ll see the link to head to the voting page for the finalists.

“You find the dog that you want to vote for – and hopefully everyone will be looking for Scamp – and then you click on who you want to vote for,” said Charles.

“People can actually vote every 24 hours. So, say, if you voted for Scamp on Monday, you can vote for him again on the Tuesday, and so on and so forth.”
