While a status yellow rain alert has been issued for Clare, Limerick, Galway and Mayo until midnight.

Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather said: “The rain has arrived in the west and wind is picking up too, the good news is it’s mild so at least the rain isn’t cold.”

He added: “People in Cork may be wondering why they are waking to no rain when orange warning started at midnight but the rain is on the way in next couple of hours.

“Starting in West Cork and moving into other areas. This is part of the issue with using county boundaries for warnings.”

Met Eireann’s Siobhan Ryan said: “We’re looking at some extremely heavy, persistent falls of rain over the course of the weekend, particularly for the south and west and especially for the far southwest of Ireland.

“Now with this, of course, we do have an orange status rainfall warning coming into effect for counties Kerry and Cork, both river and coastal flooding expected.

“And also an orange status rainfall warning for County Waterford.”

Siobhan continued: “And alongside all this, we also have a yellow status rainfall warning for counties Clare, Limerick, Galway and indeed, Mayo too.

“So the reason for this, of course, you’ve got this vast complex area of low pressure feeding in this very active weather fronts.”

The forecaster said today will bring “very blustery, mild humid conditions” and rain will slowly arrive in the north and east.

“In fact some copious falls of rain, potentially in over parts of Kerry, especially over mountainous regions here.

“That heavy rain nudging north eastwards in turn later in the day.”

Temperatures will see “fairly good values” of 13C to 16C.

The focus of that “extremely heavy rain” will be in the southwest.

Tomorrow there will be “somewhat of an improvement” but showers will develop in the southwest.

A “few isolated showers will drift in over the country” in a brisk southerly breeze.

And temperatures will range between 14C to 17C.
