Abbeyfeale lights up with a thousand bulbs

‘Let there be light’ was the mantra in Abbeyfeale this week as the local Community Council presented no fewer than one thousand energy-saving LED lightbulbs to four voluntary organisations working with the elderly people of the area.

Abbeyfeale Community Council was the driving force behind a project that is hoped will help many householders light up and save energy costs while helping the environment.

The Community Council, backed by the SSE Airtricity Community Fund, sourced the LED bulbs for the Abbeyfeale Guild of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association, the Abbeyfeale Active Retirement Group, St Ita’s Housing and Daycare Centre and the Abbeyfeale Community Alert group; presenting the bulbs at Leen’s Hotel on Thursday evening.

Abbeyfeale Community Council chairperson Maurice O’Connell and joint treasurer Frank Dennison said at the presentation they hoped the project would be of great benefit into the winter months and beyond: “We are hopeful that by having such a significant amount of LED bulbs enter the community at one time, and more so on the run up to the winter months that it should be of benefit to households in efforts to reduce electricity costs while also playing a small but important role in helping the environment and saving our planet.”
